The School of Mechanics, Civil Engineering and Architecture (SMCEA) was founded in July 2003, and the whole School has moved to Chang An Campus in 2008. Many famous Chinese scientists/educators, such as professor Ji Wenmei, Hu Peiquan, and Lv Maolie, had taught here.

SMCEA consists of three departments: the Department of Engineering Mechanics, the Department of Civil Engineering and the Department of Architecture. It also has six research institutes and centers: the Institute of Vibration Engineering, the Mechanical Properties of Advanced Materials Testing Center, the Institute of Aircraft Reliability Engineering, Department of Civil and Building Scientific Research Institute, Institute of Building Materials, Sustainable Materials Research Institute, and one internationally collaborate organization: the Sustainable Building and Environmental Research Institute (SBERI), which covers Mechanics, Aerospace, Civil Engineering, Transportation, Construction and other disciplines.

Professional Disciplines

SMCEA offers four Undergraduate Degree Programs: Engineering Mechanics, Civil Engineering, Traffic Engineering and Architecture. The School offers eleven Master Degree Programs: Solid Mechanics, General and Fundamental Mechanics, Engineering Mechanics, Structure Engineering, Highway and Railway Engineering, Architecture Design and Theory, architectural history and theory, Urban Planning and Design, Architectural and Structural Engineering (professional degree), Safety Engineering (professional degree), Aerospace Facilities Engineering (independent). Solid Mechanics, General and Fundamental Mechanics and Engineering Mechanics are offered for Doctoral Degree Programs. Meanwhile, there is a Post-doctoral station in Mechanics.

Mechanics discipline ranked fifth and seventh in Level 1subject evaluation of the ministry of education in 2009 and 2012 respectively, of which Solid Mechanics is the national key disciplines, General and Fundamental Mechanics is the key discipline of State Commission of Science and Technology for National Defense Industry (COSTIND), Structure Engineering is the "211 Project" key construction disciplines, the Architecture Specialty was officially recognized as a distinctive specialty by the Educational Bureau of the Shaanxi Provincial Government.


SMCEA currently has more than 100 faculties with high academic levels and rich experiences in teaching and research, including one member of the Chinese Academy of Science (double hiring), one member of "973 chief scientist", two Cheung Kong Scholars appointed by the Ministry of Education, one selected member of Recruitment Program for Young Professionals, five selected members of the Ministry of Education’s Excellent Talents Support Program in the new century, two recipients of the Alexander von Humboldt Science Foundation, one recipient of Henry Fok Young Teacher Foundation, two recipients of Shaanxi Provincial teaching masters, and one Xiang Jiang scholar. And the School has24full professors (Ph.D. Supervisors) and42associate professors.

Strong Experiment Platform

SMCEA has strong capabilities of research and world-class experimental conditions. It has the National Specialized Laboratory for Dynamics and Strength and the COSTIND key Laboratory for Aircraft Structural Mechanics and Strength, National Teaching Base of Engineering Mechanics and Mechanics Experimental Teaching Demonstration Center at the national level. Engineering Mechanics Teaching Base at state-level got acceptance in 2003. Mechanics Experiment and Teaching Center ranked first in Mechanics Experimental Teaching Demonstration Center Assessment at the national level in 2006 and got acceptance in 2012, it changed from the demonstration center construction unit to formal unit. Institute of Advanced Materials Testing Center and Aircraft Reliability Engineering obtained two qualifications: "Qualification of Weapons and Equipment Research and Manufacturing License" of the General Armaments Department, and “Weapons and Equipment Research and Manufacturing Accreditation” of COSTIND. The lab area has exceeded 1000 square meters.

Remarkable Achievements in Education and Teaching

Following the leading of older generation of educators, the School has a high quality teaching team represented by provincial famous teachers, who trained a large number of outstanding talents for the country. SMCEA successively won the first prize and 2 second prizes in national teaching achievements, also obtained the national mechanical basic course teaching team in 2009. Materials Mechanics and Theoretical Mechanics have been included in the national high quality courses. The team NPU grouped by our college students won the championship in the sixth session of the national "Pei-Yuan Chou Mechanical College Students Competition" in 2007, hosted by the Ministry of Education of Institutions of Higher Learning Mechanics Teaching Steering Committee, the Chinese Society of Mechanics and Pei-Yuan Chou Foundation. Meanwhile, our college undertook the 7th national "Pei-Yuan Chou Mechanical College Students Competition" in 2009 on behalf of NPU, the performance was recognized by other universities and mechanical education peer. In graduate training, two doctoral dissertations won the "National Excellent Doctoral Dissertation Nomination", four articles won "Excellent Doctoral Thesis in Shaanxi Province"; one student got "Bao Gang special scholarship". In the International and Domestic Construction Innovation Design Competition, we won the first prize, the gold medal, the most effective award and other awards for many times.

Achievements on Scientific Research

Focusing on national defense, large equipment and major projects and other national requirements, our School exploits the advantages to the full, and actively carries out relevant scientific research. Current research areas include: Advanced Materials Mechanics Behavior and Structure Analysis Technology, Aerospace Dynamics, Vibration theory and Applications, Multidisciplinary Design Optimization Theory and Applications, and Advanced Mechanics Test Technique. During the period of "11th Five-Year Plan", we have undertaken more than 150 national and provincial scientific research projects, and scientific research funds rose from more than one million in 2003 to more than 35 million in 2010. We have published more than 2000 high level of academic journals at home and abroad, of which more than 1000 indexed by SCI, EI, ISTP, also have applied for eight national patents and three licensing items. In recent years, more than 10 provincial science and technology awards have been obtained.

International Cooperation

The School carries out extensive international academic exchanges, and we have established a long-term and stable relations of cooperation with more than 20 overseas universities and research institutions. We hosted the "International Journal of Multidiscipline Modeling in Materials and Structures", and two people act as four International academic Journal editors, who both have more important influence among the same peer at home and abroad. The number of School teachers exchanging abroad and foreign scholars visiting our college reaches more than 30 every year. In addition, the subordinate international joint institutions "sustainable buildings and environment research institute (SBERI)", has established a stable relationship on teaching and scientific research cooperation with countries likeSwedenand theUnited States, international exchange teachers and students are transmitted and received between each other.
