Chinese Government Scholarships


In order to strengthen mutual understanding and friendship between the Chinese and people around the world and promote China’s exchange and cooperation with other countries in various fields, the Chinese government sets up scholarships for talented students and scholars to pursue higher education or conduct research in Chinese universities.

The China Scholarship Council (hereinafter referred to as “CSC”), entrusted by China’s Ministry of Education, is responsible for the admission, enrollment and administration of Chinese Government Scholarship recipients.


I. Scholarship Categories and Application

1. Bilateral Program

The program accords with the cooperation and exchange agreements or consensus reached by the Chinese government and the governments and institutions of other nations. It is open to undergraduates, postgraduates, general and senior scholars.

Applicants shall file the application with the dispatching department of their home countries.


2. Designated Scholarship Programs

These programs are set up in accordance with cooperation agreements between China and international organizations and institutions.

An applicant shall file an application with the international organizations and institutions concerned.

3. University Program

The program is designed to finance the study of talented international students in China that are directly and recommended by designated Chinese universities.

Northwestern Polytechnical University (NPU) is offering the CSC-University Program to international students,which is open to undergraduates and postgraduates. Applicants shall file the application with NPU for this program.


4. Student Exchange Program

The program, launched in accordance with exchange and cooperation agreements between Chinese universities and foreign partners, is designed to support general and senior scholars for a training session of no more than 12 months.

The applicant shall file the application with NPU and foreign partners.



II. Supporting Categories, Duration, Institutions, and Majors

1. Supporting Categories

Chinese Government Scholarship programs sponsor undergraduates, postgraduates, general and senior scholars.

2. Duration

The Chinese Government Scholarship covers both major study and Chinese language (preparatory) study. The language courses last one year, whereas the duration of the scholarship for major study conforms to that as required.

III. Scholarship and Coverage

1. Type of the scholarship

Full scholarship covers the tuition fee, dormitory fee, stipend and medical insurance.

 Partial scholarship covers one or some items of the full scholarship.

2. Details of the coverage

(1) Tuition fees;

(2) University dormitory or accommodation subsidy;

(3) Stipend:

Undergraduates: CNY 2,500 per month;

Master’s students/general scholars: CNY 3,000 per month;

Doctoral students/senior scholars: CNY 3,500 per month.

Within the scholarship duration, registered scholarship students will receive a stipend from their host university each month. Students registering on or before the 15th of the month will receive a full stipend of that month. Those who register after the 15th of the month will receive a half stipend of that month. Graduating students will receive stipend until half month after the graduation date. If registered student stays out of China for more than 15 days due to a personal reason (school holidays excluded), his stipend will be suspended during the period of absence.

(4) Comprehensive medical insurance:

CNY 800 per person per year;

CNY 400 per person (for programs lasting less than six months)

IV. Eligibility

To be eligible, an applicant must:

1. take the "China Scholastic Competency Assessment (short as CSCA)" and upload a valid score report when applying for bachelor programs (Official website of CSCA: www.csca.cn );

2. have passed the HSK (Level 3) when applying for a Chinese-taught general scholar program (excluding Chinese language majors) or when applying for a Chinese-taught senior scholar program;

3. meet the admission requirements of NPU of preference in terms of language proficiency and academic ability, among others, when applying for a program taught in a language other than Chinese:

V. Application Process

Applicants should choose one of the following methods to apply for the different scholarship programs.


Path I -University Program-Apply via NPU.

For University Program, the application receiving agency is NPU.

Step 1, Check the major list to confirm the major whether is supported by University Program for NPU.

Step 2, Complete the online application at NPU application portal http://admission.nwpu.edu.cn/.

Step 3, Complete the interview arranged by NPU and get the Pre-admission Notice as recommended candidates by NPU for CSC University Program. Then complete the application form at CSC system https://studyinchina.csc.edu.cn/#/login before required deadline.

Step 4, NPU shall submit the recommended candidates list and their application documents to CSC for following application review.


Path II - Bilateral Program-Apply via dispatching department of their home countries.

For Bilateral Program, the application receiving agency is dispatching department of their home countries.

Step 1, Check the information about NPU and offered majors by visiting websites (http://www.campuschina.org); And contact NPU for the Pre-admission Notice.

Step 2, Reach the local relevant department of the local government or Chinese Embassy for a recommendation;

Step 3, Fill in and submit the Application Form for Chinese Government Scholarship online via the Chinese Government Scholarship Information System (http://www.campuschina.org) before required deadline;

Step 4, The dispatching department shall submit the recommended candidates list and their application documents to CSC for following application review.


Path III - Designated Scholarship Programs-Apply via international organizations and institutions.

For Designated Scholarship Programs, the application receiving agency is international organizations and institutions.

Step 1, Check the information about NPU and offered majors by visiting websites (http://www.campuschina.org); And contact NPU for the Pre-admission Notice.

Step 2, Reach the international organizations and institutions for a recommendation;

Step 3, Fill in and submit the Application Form for Chinese Government Scholarship online via the Chinese Government Scholarship Information System (http://www.campuschina.org) before required deadline;

Step 4, The international organizations and institutions shall submit the recommended candidates list and their application documents to CSC for following application review.


Path IV - Student Exchange Program-Apply via NPU

For Student Exchange Program, the application receiving agency is NPU.
